Summer by Deborah Wiles
Summary: Freedom summer is a story about racism. Joe, the narrator of the story, is white, but John Henry is a friend of his and he is black. John’s mother works for the narrator’s mother. Even though the boys were different skin colors they played together. The boys enjoy playing with each other but they come across some difficulties. John wasn’t able to do some of the things that Joe did; John even said that he wish he could. Finally, the two boys decided to go into the ice pop shop together even though it was forbidden.

Summary: The story “Number the Star” is the point of view of ten year old Annemarie. Thought out the story she learned how to be brave in courage. The overall story is about the Jewish population was taking away during the holocaust. Annemarie courage allowed her to keep her friend safe from the Nazis.

Summary: This is the story of Caleb and Anna two siblings. After the loss of their mother, their father took on the roles that the mother did. Soon, their father decided that he wanted to get married and her name was Sarah. Caleb and Anna tried so hard to impress her. They did so many things like picking flowers. They were even happy that she knew how to sing in fact she even got their father to sing again. The two siblings were frighten and concerned when they thought she was leaving town. When she arrived back their father asked Sara to marry him. They became a loving family.

To Somewhere by Eve Bunting
Summary: The story is about 14 orphans that are taken on a train to take them west to be adopted. The story though focuses on a little girl named Marianne and for a short time a little girl named Nora. The two girls wanted to be together and didn’t want to leave one another side. When they got to the destination all the other orphans was getting picked, when Nora got picked she was mad because she didn’t want to leave Marianne. Marianne was happy she didn’t get pick, she was hoping her mom would. Then when they were on the last stop to “somewhere” she was the last person. The person that she went with still wasn’t happy but she said “sometimes what you get is better than what you want” and she left happy.

Summary: This story is about a girl grandmother telling a story of when she was a little girl and wanted to walk the town alone. She wanted to see if one of the tasks was possible to do. After she completed the task she got thirsty and drank from a “whites only” water fountain, she thought because she had white socks on she was aloud; then white man was mad and punished her and the other blacks. The chicken man came to her recuse and the “whites only” sign was no longer there.
